Jilly has a long history of service to the North Sydney community. She has served 22 years as a Councillor, 9 of those years as Mayor.
Jilly has worked very hard for North Sydney residents and has been a full-time Mayor. She meets with residents and business people, she personally answers every call to her mobile phone number which is publicly available.
The CBD has come alive again during Jilly's Mayoralty. She has introduced lunch-time events in Brett Whiteley Place which have been a huge success. North Sydney now has a thriving after-hours economy. New restaurants such as Glorietta, Lobby Boy and the Green Moustache have chosen our CBD to launch their hospitality ventures.
In the last nine years many new free community events have been introduced right across the municipality. These include the Sunset Series of concerts in Waverton Park (packed to capacity), Bark in the Park Dog Show, Yoga on the Coal Loader Platform, The Leisure and Lifestyle Festival, Sculpture at Sawmillers Reserve, Happiness Works Here Street Fairs, The Backstreet Block Party, The Rooftop Fiesta, BBQ by The Bridge, The 125th Anniversary Community Fair, Live at St Leonards Park.
Jilly is using every opportunity to create public open space where local residents can congregate. In 2020 Young Street was a busy, congested side street; it is now a calm, sunny, open-air plaza for families, local workers and visitors to enjoy. A brand new plaza in the heart of Kirribilli will be completed by July 2021.
Jilly converted an unused section of Anzac Park into a thriving community garden. It is loved by locals and used frequently by students at Anzac Park Public School.
During her two terms as Mayor Jilly's achievements for the North Sydney community have been numerous. One of her proudest achievements has been making thousands of local residents new Australian Citizens.
Jilly has championed the overdue redevelopment of the iconic North Sydney Pool. She successfully lobbied both the State and Federal government for grant funding for the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken by North Sydney Council. By Christmas 2022 the North Sydney community will be enjoying a world class aquatic facility.
On the economic front Jilly has kept rates low, and has ensured North Sydney Council remains in great financial shape. As Mayor, Jilly has successfully led North Sydney through the highest period of economic growth in its history and the global pandemic.
Jilly has expanded her earlier smoke-free initiatives (eg smoke-free outdoor dining) to the first smoke-free CBD in Australia. Jilly responded to community feedback and installed a raised pedestrian crossing outside the entrance to the Woolworths Complex at Crows Nest. Also, our suburban streets have been livened with hand-painted artworks on utility boxes thanks to Jilly.
